Tractor Trailer Rescue
October 9th, 2015- Only hours after picking up from a cut job on Pennsylvania Ave the Rescue Squad was back on the street. In the very early morning hours of Oct. 9th at around 0400 Hours a Rescue Local was sounded over Channel 1, reported to be at the Inner Loop of the Capitol Beltway at Suitland Parkway in Company 26’s area. While units from the Third and First Battalion were responding, Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications advised units they were receiving multiple calls for a tractor trailer reported to have left the Capitol Beltway at an overpass bridge for Suitland Parkway. First arriving units found a tractor trailer that had crashed into a ‘Jersey Wall’ on the Outer Loop of the Capitol Beltway at the overpass for Suitland Parkway, rode the wall for several feet, and then crashed about 20 feet below onto Suitland Parkway. The entire tractor trailer was found upside down with both the tractor and the trailer on their roof. The driver of the vehicle was still entrapped in the cab of the tractor. The Rescue Squad arrived on the scene moments later, stabilized the vehicle, set up lighting, gained access to the patient, and began extrication. Simultaneously Command requested other Rescue units dispatched to the scene due to the magnitude of this incident. The patient was extricated and handed over to EMS units standing by. Units on the scene worked together to handle this unique extrication. Suitland Parkway would be shut down for the majority of the morning rush hour as the Rescue Squad picked up and readied themselves for the next call.
